DESCRIPTION: On an indoor hard court, T.V.O. Kids host Gabrielle leans against a goalpost with her left hand on her hip. Gabrielle has short brown hair and wears a purple T.V.O. Kids t-shirt.

GABRIELLE: Have you heard the World Cup is coming to Toronto?

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle straightens and bounces excitedly. She gestures with her hands as she speaks.

GABRIELLE: In fact, you're probably gonna be seeing a lot more soccer everywhere: on T.V., in parks, and maybe even your own neighbourhood. But have you ever wondered where did soccer come from? Well, believe it or not, people have been kicking balls around for thousands of years.

DESCRIPTION: A video montage features a giant golden statue at the top of a staircase in China, the Acropolis of Athens, and an aerial view of a town in Central America. On the hard court, Gabrielle stands in front of the net.

GABRIELLE: Games that looked a little bit like soccer were played a long, long, long time ago in places like China, Greece, and parts of Central America. But the version of soccer we know today really started in England about 150 years ago.

DESCRIPTION: On a television, a historic black-and-white film of a soccer match plays. A player scores, hitting the ball with his head.

GABRIELLE: That's when people began agreeing on rules, like how many players are on a team, and what counts as a goal, and what they can and can't do with the ball. And as the game spread around the world, different countries fell in love with it, and they added their own style, energy, and passion.

DESCRIPTION: A spinning soccer ball features flags of the world.

GABRIELLE: And you may also know, around the world, they prefer to call it "football" instead. And now, soccer is the most popular sport on the planet.

DESCRIPTION: In a video clip, people stand in a circle and kick a soccer ball to each other, with their long shadows stretching across the grass.

GABRIELLE: It's played by kids and adults in almost every country. Pretty amazing that a simple game with a ball can connect so many people. See you later, T.V.O. Kids!

DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle smiles and waves, then leans against the goalpost and puts her left hand on her hip.
