Descriptive Transcript

[Energetic music plays, door creaks, boing]

DESCRIPTION: In an animation, the front door of a townhouse opens, and Nikhil smiles. He has short brown hair and brown eyes and wears a red hooded sweater. Inside the house, his little brother, Jay, also has short brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a purple shirt with blue-green trim.

NIKHIL: Hi, I'm Nikhil.

JAY: And I'm Jay!

[Map rustles, boings, plane whooshes, Appa shouts, Amma laughs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil pulls down a map showing a small boat in the water off the coast of South India. Amma’s face appears. She has chin-length brown hair with a yellow bow. A plane flies to England, and Appa’s face appears. He has short brown hair and a beard. A heart-shaped outline surrounds them. Amma dances, and Appa holds a cat-shaped mug.

[Song] Here's a little story about where our family's from. It starts in South India with Amma, our mom. She caught a plane to England and met our dad, Appa. She loves to dance, and he makes the best cuppa. Oh. And then we came along. Oh. And this is our song.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

JAY: Nikhil likes...

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil peers through binoculars.

NIKHIL: Missions! Jay likes...

[Boings, energetic music continues]

DESCRIPTION: Jay bounces with his arms in the air.

JAY: Being loud!

[Chimes, coins rattle, rocket ship whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: They high-five and daydream about riding coins on a carrom board. In outer space, they peer through the window of a rocket ship.

[Song] We both love to dream. We can shoot a carrom pocket. Yeah, or blast off in a rocket. We make the greatest team.

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay fist-bump.

[Needle scratches a record, slide whistle]

NIKHIL: Wait.

JAY: What?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay hold a picture of their grandparents, Ammamma and Thatha. Ammamma has short black hair and wears a yellow shirt and a blue saree. Thatha has short white hair and wears a yellow jacket, a white shirt, and eyeglasses on a chain around his neck.

NIKHIL: There's Ammamma and Thatha.

[Jim and Nana exclaim]

DESCRIPTION: Jim and Nana stand behind Nikhil and Jay. Jim has short brown hair and holds a tray of food. He wears a green shirt and brown pants. Nana holds her lollipop traffic sign turned red.

JAY: And Jim and Nana.

NIKHIL: And don't forget Max the cat.

[Max meows, crash, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Max, an orange tabby cat, licks her paw, then lunges forward. Nikhil and Jay dance with their parents, Nana, Jim, and Max.

[Song] Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay. Oh-oh, Nikhil and Jay.

[Door slams, Nikhil and Jay giggle]

DESCRIPTION: In the living room, Star and Chickpea sit on the sofa, and Nikhil pops up in front of them. He wears a top hat.

NIKHIL: Ta-da! Prepare to be amazed!

[Whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil waves a black wand with a white tip.

NIKHIL: Abracadabra! Zip-zap-zoom!

[Drum roll plays]

NIKHIL: Make a Jay appear in the room!

[Triumphant music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pops up behind the sofa.

JAY: Yes! Woohoo!

[Both boys laugh]

AMMA SINGS: Doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo!

NIKHIL AND JAY: Huh?

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Amma and Appa stand near the dining room doorway.

AMMA: It's the birthday boy!

[Party horn blares]

DESCRIPTION: Amma and Appa hold out their arms and move away from the doorway. Jim enters the room with his arms out.

JIM: Whoo! Ho-ho-ho!

[The music stops]

NIKHIL AND JAY: Jim!

JIM: It's me!

[Squeaking]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay hug Jim’s legs.

JIM: Oh. Oh.

[Jim chuckles]

NIKHIL AND JAY: Happy birthday, Jim!

[Boings, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay jumps excitedly.

JAY: Jim, Jim! We've got a surprise for you.

AMMA: Huh?

JIM: Oh...

JAY: It's a special birthday magic trick.

[Amma gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jim puts his right hand on Nikhil’s shoulder and his left hand on Jay’s shoulder.

JIM: Oh, yes! I love magic!

NIKHIL: It was meant to be a surprise, Jay.

JAY: Uh-oh!

[Squeak, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Appa leans towards the boys.

APPA: Don't worry. Jim doesn't know what the special trick is.

[Jay and Nikhil exclaim, groan]

APPA: Ooh! Ooh! Is it the one when Jay jumps out from behind the sofa? Oh, it's so cute.

NIKHIL AND JAY: Appa!

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay look down at the floor.

APPA: Oh, sorry.

[Creak, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Appa backs away.

JIM: Aww, look, whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be...

[Chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Jim pulls a coin from behind Nikhil’s ear.

JIM: Magic!

[Nikhil and Jay gasp]

NIKHIL WHISPERS: Wow!

[Jim and the boys laugh, whoosh, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Later, in their bedroom, Nikhil and Jay sit on the floor beside their bunk beds.

NIKHIL: We have to think of a new trick now.

[Jay gasps]

JAY: We could do the trick where we take off your nose!

[Honking, the music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Jay lunges forward and grabs Nikhil’s nose.

NIKHIL, NASALLY: Er... I don't think it's working.

[Max meows, upbeat music notes play, Nikhil and Jay gasp, Max purrs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay look at Max, and she licks her paw.

NIKHIL: We can make a roaring tiger disappear.

JAY: Yes!

[Drum roll plays, whooshing, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil waves his wand.

NIKHIL: Abracadabra! Zip-zap-zoom!

[Max meows, slide whistle, thump, Max purrs]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil points his wand at Max, and Max falls on her back.

[The music stops, Nikhil sighs]

NIKHIL: What would be the best birthday trick ever for Jim? Hmm...

[Audience cheers, applauds, Jay cheers, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: In a daydream, Nikhil imagines standing on a stage in a theatre with Star and a box with a purple curtain on the front. In the audience, Jay sits between Chickpea and Max.

JAY: Woohoo! Yeah!

[Whooshing]

DESCRIPTION: Star enters the box, the curtain closes, and Nikhil waves his wand.

NIKHIL: Zip-zap-zoom!

[Chiming, audience cheers, Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: The curtain opens to reveal the empty box.

JAY: Yay! Woohoo!

[The music stops, Star squeaks]

DESCRIPTION: The daydream ends. In the bedroom, Nikhil holds his wand and smiles. He picks up Star, and then puts the stuffy down on the floor.

NIKHIL: Ha-ha! Actually, we can make Star disappear!

[Chiming, upbeat music notes play, boing, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Stars appear in Jay’s eyes, and he jumps. Jay leans forward and puts his left hand on Nikhil’s right shoulder.

JAY: What?! That would be amazing! You should definitely do that trick in front of everyone.

[Mellow music plays]

NIKHIL: In front of everyone? Me? Or... you could do it?

[Whooshing, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay twirls away from Nikhil.

JAY: Nuh-uh. I'm going to be the Great Jaydini! The Magnificent Magical Nikhil's assistant!

[Jay gasps, boings]

DESCRIPTION: Jay hops excitedly.

JAY: Come on. We need sparkly curtains.

NIKHIL: Er...

[Whooshing, upbeat music plays, creaking, squeak]

DESCRIPTION: In her shed, Amma looks at the stacked bolts of fabric and gives Jay a pink one. Nikhil stands behind him holding yellow and blue bolts.

AMMA: You know, when I was a little girl, I saw a magician in Chennai. He got everyone to join in with his spell.

[Jay gasps, Nikhil giggles, majestic music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Amma waves her ruler like a wand.

AMMA: Janta! Manta! Jee-boom-bah!

NIKHIL AND JAY: Wow!

[Upbeat music notes play, boings]

DESCRIPTION: Jay waves the pink fabric bolt like a wand.

JAY: Janta! Manta! Jee-boom-bah! I love it! Let's say it in the show!

NIKHIL: Er...

[Whoosh, thumping music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay hugs Nikhil’s side.

JAY: Wait until you see the Magnificent Magical Nikhil perform his trick, Amma! It's--

NIKHIL: It's-- it's no big deal.

[The music stops, slide whistle, whooshing, crashing]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil drops the fabric bolts.

NIKHIL: Oh!

[Rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil kneels beside the fabric, and Amma kneels beside him. He picks up the blue bolt, and she gives him the yellow one.

AMMA: Are you okay, chellam?

NIKHIL: Er...

[Whoosh, upbeat music plays, Nikhil exclaims]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stands beside Nikhil.

JAY: Sorry, Amma. The Magnificent Magical Nikhil and the Great Jaydini have a lot to do.

[Whoosh]

DESCRIPTION: Jay pulls Nikhil away. In the kitchen, Appa places a laddoo atop a stack in a bowl as Jim watches.

APPA: Birthday laddoos!

JIM: Oh-ho-ho!

[Appa chuckles, awed music note plays]

JIM: My birthday, my laddoos.

[Thump]

DESCRIPTION: Jim reaches for the laddoos, and Nana grabs his wrist and pulls him away from the laddoos.

NANA: Whoa-whoa-whoa! Not yet, Jim!

JIM: Hey!

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil and Jay pop up behind the counter.

JAY: Appa, we need a magic box.

[Upbeat music plays]

APPA: Hmm. In that case, sounds like I need my-- oh, where did I put it? Where is it?

[Clattering, picker rattles]

DESCRIPTION: Appa picks up his litter picker.

APPA: A-ha! Here it is. My magic litter picker.

[Slide whistle, picker rattles, rustling]

DESCRIPTION: Outside, Appa opens a blue bin and uses the picker to lift a box out.

APPA: A-zibbidy-zox!

[Rustling, thump, Nikhil exclaims]

DESCRIPTION: In the dining room, he puts the box on the floor in front of Nikhil and Jay.

APPA: One magic box!

[Upbeat music notes play, Jay giggles]

APPA: Ta-da!

JAY: Thanks, Appa. Maybe leave the magic to us.

[Thumping music plays]

JAY: Wait until you see the Magnificent Magical Nikhil's trick! It's--

[The music stops]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil holds up both hands, palms facing outward.

NIKHIL: It's nothing.

[Discordant music note plays]

JAY: Oh, of course. It's a surprise.

[Nikhil chuckles nervously, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil walks backwards.

NIKHIL: Hmm. Come on. We should go and—

[Slide whistle, crashing]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil trips on the box and falls.

NIKHIL: Whoa!

APPA: Ooh.

[Nikhil groans, descending music note plays, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil sits in the box. He puts on his top hat, it slides to the side, and he straightens it.

NIKHIL: Practise. Ha-ha.

[Upbeat music plays, whooshing, boings, Max meows, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: In their bedroom, Nikhil stands beside the decorated box with Max nearby on the carpet and Star on the bottom bunk. Jay spins, then bounces from foot to foot.

JAY: Ladles and gentle peoples, and Max-the-cats... may I present the Magnificent Magical Nikhil's disappearing trick.

[Slide whistles, light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil looks at Jay. His hat slides forward, and he pushes it back with his wand.

NIKHIL: Er...Welcome to the stage, sparkly Spark. Er... I mean Scar-- I mean Star!

[Max meows]

JAY: Huh?

[Max meows]

DESCRIPTION: Max walks away.

JAY: Hey! You're not meant to disappear, Max; Star is.

APPA, DISTANTLY: Nikhil! Jay! We're all ready for you!

[Nikhil gasps]

NIKHIL: Er...

[Nikhil gulps]

JAY SHOUTS: Yeah! So are we!

[Soft music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil sits on the bottom bunk with his arms around his knees and the top hat on the bed beside him.

NIKHIL: Oh...

JAY: Huh?

DESCRIPTION: Jay walks to Nikhil.

JAY: Magnificent Magical Nikhil, what's up?

NIKHIL: It's my tummy. It feels all grumbly and strange.

[Nikhil’s tummy gurgles]

NIKHIL: Maybe we should do the show another time.

[Slide whistle, wand whooshes]

DESCRIPTION: Jay picks up the wand and waves it.

JAY: Or the Great Jaydini can magic your rumble-grumble away!

[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay waves the wand over Nikhil’s tummy.

JAY: Janta! Manta! Jee-boom-bah!

[Nikhil laughs, the music stops]

JAY: Did it work, Nikhil?

NIKHIL: A bit.

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM CHANT, DISTANTLY: Nikhil and Jay! Nikhil and Jay!

JAY: Come on, Nikhil, let's go!

[Boings, soft music plays, footsteps patter, Star squeaks, Nikhil murmurs, rustle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay bounces away from Nikhil, who stops smiling and looks down. Nikhil slides off the bed, puts on the top hat, and picks up Star. He grabs the box and drags it across the floor.

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM CHANT, DISTANTLY: Nikhil and Jay! Nikhil and Jay!

[Boing, the music stops, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: In the living room, Amma, Appa, Nana, and Jim sit on the sofa, facing the pink and yellow fabric curtains hanging from a rope tied to a coat rack and a cat scratching post. Jay steps out from behind the curtains.

JAY: Drum roll, please!

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM: Hoorah!

[Drumming on knees, Nikhil’s tummy gurgles]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil peeks through a gap between the curtains.

NIKHIL: Ugh...

[Upbeat music plays, slide whistles]

DESCRIPTION: Jay opens the curtains, revealing the box.

JAY: Here he is, the one, the only, the Magnificent Magical Nikhil!

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM: Ooh!

[The music stops]

AMMA: Wow, he's turned into a box.

[Family gasps]

JAY: Huh? Er...

[Light music notes play]

DESCRIPTION: Jay looks into the box.

JAY WHISPERS: Nikhil, what are you doing? Nikhil?

[Squeaking, soft music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil sits in the box, holding the top hat in front of his face. He lowers it and looks at Jay.

NIKHIL: I don't know. I feel scared and jumpy...

[Stomach gurgles, the music stops]

NIKHIL: And my tummy keeps growling. I just want to hide.

[Squeaky music note plays]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil covers his face with the hat.

JAY: Hmm... Scared and jumpy? Growling? Want to hide?

[Jay gasps, ding]

JAY: You must have a monster in your tummy!

[Energetic music plays, monster growls, thumping, slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: Jay imagines a green monster bouncing around in Nikhil’s tummy. Jay slides into Nikhil’s tummy, holding the wand.

JAY: Wee!

[Jay gasps, slide whistle, zapping]

DESCRIPTION: Jay traps the monster in the wand.

JAY: Yah! Yay!

[Jay gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jay’s daydream ends, and he smiles at Nikhil.

JAY: That's it!

[Boings, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jay stands in front of the audience and bows.

JAY: Ladies and jelly-wobbles! Slight change of plan.

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM: Huh?

[Drum roll plays]

JAY: I need to remove a monster from Nikhil's tummy.

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM: Ooh!

JAY: But I need an assistant.

[Light music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jim raises his hand, then stands.

[The music stops]

JIM: Me! Me! I'll do it! I love a monster trick! Ooh, pick me, pick me!

[Nana chuckles, boings]

JIM: Oh?

DESCRIPTION: Jim crouches beside Jay.

JAY WHISPERS: It's not a trick, Jim. There really is a monster in Nikhil's tummy.

JIM: Oh, I see.

[Ding, soft music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jim winks at Jay, then walks to the box.

JIM: I know exactly what to do.

JAY: You do? How?

JIM: Once, I was backstage, about to play my guitar to thousands of people!

DESCRIPTION: On the sofa, Nana holds her hand in front of her mouth and leans toward Appa and Amma.

NANA WHISPERS: Six people in the local town hall.

[Appa and Amma laugh]

JIM: And there was a big grumbly monster inside my tummy, too.

[Tummy gurgles]

JAY: Oh! Really? How did you get it out?

[Slide whistle]

DESCRIPTION: In the box, Nikhil slowly peeks over the top at Jim.

JIM: Oh, I didn't - that's the thing. I went onstage when the monster was still inside my tummy. But as I started playing my guitar...

[Guitar riff plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jim plays air guitar.

JIM SINGS: Weeeeoow-wow-ow-ow-ow!

JIM: The crowd started cheering.

[Jay gasps]

JIM: Cheer, cheer.

NANA: Oh.

[Nana, Amma, and Appa cheer]

JIM: And I forgot all about my monster, so it vanished.

[Jay gasps]

JIM: Alakazam!

[Chiming, Jim laughs, Jay giggles]

JIM: If I remember rightly, my monster looked like this...

[Jim growls, wobbling]

DESCRIPTION: Jim crosses his arms and holds his mouth wide with his fingers. He puts his hands behind his ears and moves them, then holds both hands up and squints through his right eye with his left eye open wide.

[Jim chuckles, squeaking, Nikhil laughs]

DESCRIPTION: In the box, Nikhil stands.

JIM: What does your monster look like, Nikhil?

NIKHIL: Er... Um...

[Wobbling]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil lifts his hands, squeezes his right eye shut, and sticks out his tongue.

NIKHIL: Blah!

[Everyone laughs]

APPA: Oh-ho! That's a good one.

[Nikhil chuckles, upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jim hugs Nikhil to his left side.

NIKHIL: Thank you, Jim.

JIM: What for?

NIKHIL: My tummy isn't grumbling anymore.

JIM: Oh, you don't need to thank me. You've performed the best trick of all - you made your monster disappear.

[Nikhil chuckles, audience applauds, squeak]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil hugs Jim.

JIM: He-he-hey! Aww!

[Jim chuckles, squeaking, Nikhil gasps]

DESCRIPTION: Jim and Nikhil hug, then Jay pokes Nikhil in the side.

[The music stops, Star squeaks]

DESCRIPTION: Jay picks up the top hat and Star.

JAY: Magnificent Magical Nikhil, can you do your other trick now?

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil takes the hat and Star.

NIKHIL: Yeah!

JAY: Yay!

[Boings, Jay giggles, upbeat music plays, chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Jay runs in front of the box and jumps excitedly. Nikhil runs over, wearing his top hat and carrying the wand and Star the stuffy. Stars float above him.

JAY: Prepare to be so amazed! It's the Magnificent Magical Nikhil and his disappearing Star trick!

DESCRIPTION: Amma, Appa, Nana, and Jim sit on the sofa.

AMMA, APPA, NANA, AND JIM: Ooh!

[Chiming]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil waves his wand over Star.

NIKHIL: Janta! Manta! Jee-boom-bah!

[Boings]

DESCRIPTION: Nikhil throws Star into the air. Jay jumps excitedly, then he and Nikhil spread their arms wide.

NIKHIL: Ta-da!

[The music stops, slide whistle, Star squeaks, blinks boing, everyone cheers, clapping]

DESCRIPTION: Star lands in the box behind the boys. The audience blinks, then applauds. The boys bow.

[Rumbling]

NIKHIL AND JAY: Huh?

[Jay gasps]

JAY: Is the monster back?

JIM: Oh, no. I'm just hungry.

[Jim’s tummy rumbles, eyebrow boings]

DESCRIPTION: Appa arches his right eyebrow, points at Jim, pumps his fists in the air, then raises both arms.

APPA: Oh, well, in that case, it must be birthday laddoos time!

[Gong booms, disco music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Jim jumps to his feet and moonwalks towards a carrom board.

JIM: Ooh! All mine! All mine!

[Thump, slide whistle, clattering]

DESCRIPTION: Jim knocks over the board and coins as he falls.

JIM: Oh! Oh!

[Nikhil and Jay gasp, laugh]

NANA: Oh, Jim, what are you like?

[Max meows, everyone laughs, disco music plays]

DESCRIPTION: Max jumps onto the back of the sofa, and everyone looks at Jim sitting on the floor.

[Upbeat music plays]
