[Upbeat music plays]

DESCRIPTION: The wind blows the episode title away, and the grey-haired woman stands beside the red bird, smiling.
GREY-HAIRED WOMAN: Oh!
[Gasps, worm snaps, upbeat music continues, wind gusts]
DESCRIPTION: The bird eats a worm, and the grey-haired woman picks them up and pulls the worm out of their beak.
[Birds chirp, dog barks distantly, cat meows]
DESCRIPTION: On a cloudy day, two birds fly across the sky. Two- and three-storey detached houses line a residential street.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Once, there was a woman who was neither old, nor young, but somewhere in between, who lived in a town that was neither large, nor small, but somewhere in between, in a house that was neither big, nor--Oh, you get the idea.
[Adrian Lester clears his throat, grey-haired woman snores]
DESCRIPTION: In a bedroom with a slanted wall, the grey-haired woman sleeps with a beam of sunlight falling on her bed.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Her name was Angela Bowling, and each day she woke early thanks to her trusty alarm clock, Enid.
[Enid ticks, alarm rings]
DESCRIPTION: On a nightstand, Enid shakes.
ANGELA: Ah!
[Enid rattles, bell tinkles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela picks Enid up, pushes the button on top, and puts Enid back on the nightstand.
ANGELA: Morning, Enid. Good girl.
[Light music plays, footsteps patter]
DESCRIPTION: Beside the bed, Angela stretches and jogs in place.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: No snooze button, or "Just five more minutes," for Angela, because she was a woman of action, with a strict routine. Each morning, she got up...
[Scraping]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens her drapes and discovers an orange and white butterfly fluttering outside.
ANGELA: Good morning, world!
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Then hurried, hastened, and headed to her beloved garden...
[Door opens, Angela sniffs, serene music plays, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens her door and steps outside.
ANGELA: And, good morning, garden.
[Birds chirp, serene music continues, water splashes]
DESCRIPTION: Butterflies flutter across Angela’s flowering backyard garden. A stone patio halfway across the yard has a wrought iron table with two chairs. Angela waters a plant.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Where she checked on her plants...
ANGELA: Well done, you lot. Soon be blooming. Ah!
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Banished weeds...
[Angela tuts]
DESCRIPTION: Angela plucks a weed out of a flower bed and drops it on the soil.
ANGELA: Be gone, you invasive miscreant.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And harvested any fruit or vegetables that were ripe.
[Birds chirp, worm rustles]
DESCRIPTION: A worm inches along a branch on a pear tree.
ANGELA: Morning, Wilhelmina. You look ready to drop. Shall I give you a hand?
[Leaves rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Angela shakes the pear tree, Wilhelmina, then holds a basket beneath it.
ANGELA: Hm.
[Thumping, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: Angela nudges the tree with her hip and pears fall into her basket.
ANGELA: Ah! Good work, Wilhemina.
[Birds chirp, grass rustles, thump, upbeat music plays, peeler squeaks, knife chops, liquid splashes, slurping, oven door creaks, pan rattles, oven door slams, Angela exclaims]
DESCRIPTION: Angela carries the basket away from the tree, and a pear falls to the ground. In her kitchen, she peels a pear, then chops four on a wooden cutting board. Angela pours liquid into a bowl and stirs it. Angela uses a spoon and samples liquid from a pot on the stove. She puts a baking tray in the oven. Later, Angela puts the baking tray on the table, picks up a biscuit, then drops it and blows on her hand.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And then, she'd cook what she'd harvested. Angela loved cooking. All the peeling, and slicing, and dicing, then the folding, and mixing, and fixing, and finally, the boiling, and baking, and all 'round making, because it meant that when she went on one of her regular visits to see her friend Rita, and her sons Cyril and Cedric, she could take them homegrown, homemade deliciousness.
[Picture rustles, bag rustles, door opens]
DESCRIPTION: Angela straightens a picture of Rita, Cyril, and Cedric, who all have short red hair. Angela nods, then puts a reusable bag on the table. Angela leaves her house carrying two bags, and a man lifts his hat as he walks past on the sidewalk.
MAN: Mornin'.
[The music stops, footsteps patter, water splashes]
DESCRIPTION: In a park, a duck dives into a pond. Angela walks to a log beside a dirt path.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: It was a long way to Rita's house, so Angela would always stop for a rest in the park...
[Birds chirp, bags rustle, Angela sighs, insects chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sits.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Where she'd see her other friends.
[Upbeat music plays, jars clink]
DESCRIPTION: Angela waves to a woman with long blonde hair who pushes a baby buggy filled with stuffed animals. Angela takes a jar out of her bag.
ANGELA: Morning, Miss Twyford. I've made some lovely pear jam for you and your dollies.
MRS. TWYFORD: Hmph! Not "dollies!" "Children."
ANGELA: Sorry, children, yes. Definitely. Anyway, jam a-hoy.
[Lid scrapes]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford takes the jar, glaring at Angela. She opens it, dips her finger in, and tastes the jam.
MRS. TWYFORD: Hmph. Hmph. Hm. Mm.
[Slurping, buggy wheels rattling]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford licks jam off her fingers as she pushes her buggy along the path.
[Dog barks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela waves.
ANGELA: Ah! Gerald, Harold!
DESCRIPTION: Two men with blond crew cuts arrive with a brown dog. The first wears a blue turtleneck and uses a wheelchair. The second man wears a brown turtleneck.
MAN IN BLUE TURTLENECK: Oh, hello, Angela.
MAN IN BROWN TURTLENECK: Morning, Angela.
DESCRIPTION: Angela takes a baking pan out of her bag.
ANGELA: Fancy a pear crumble?
MAN IN BLUE TURTLENECK: Ha! Thanks, Angela.
[Dog barks, Angela giggles]
DESCRIPTION: The man wearing the blue turtleneck takes the pan, and the men smile at each other. The brown dog sits in front of Angela and smiles at her.
ANGELA: Oh, don't worry, Wellington. I haven't forgotten you. Here's a yummy bone.
[Wellington whines]
DESCRIPTION: Angela takes a bone out of her bag and the brown dog, Wellington, wags his tail.
ANGELA: Made of pears.
[Wellington whimpers, Angela chuckles, wheels rattle]
DESCRIPTION: Wellington takes the pear bone and leaves with the two men.
ANGELA: Right, onwards to Rita's.
[Ducks quack, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Two ducks stand on the shore by the pond and watch Angela. She picks up her bag and walks away.
ANGELA: Oh, sorry, ducks. Nothing for you, I'm afraid.
[Duck quacks, upbeat music continues, teacup scrapes, teapot rattles, children exclaim]
DESCRIPTION: The ducks look at a sign that features a line striking through a picture of a person feeding a duck. In Rita’s kitchen, Rita pours tea for Angela at the kitchen table. Rita sits beside Angela, and Cyril and Cedric draw at the other end of the table.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Once she got to Rita's, Angela and Rita would always enjoy a nice cup of tea, a lovely slice of cake, and a good chat. They'd talk about the news...
[Spoon clinks]
DESCRIPTION: Rita stirs her tea, then puts down her spoon.
RITA: Awful, isn't it?
ANGELA: Oh, terrible.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Gardens...
ANGELA: Much nicer than the news.
RITA: Oh, totally.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: What the boys had been up to...
[Pencil crayons scratch]
DESCRIPTION: The younger red-haired boy, who wears a red shirt and eyeglasses, stops drawing, and the older red-haired boy looks at his brother.
YOUNGER RED-HAIRED BOY: When we went to the playground yesterday, I was sick on the slide.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: And I was sick on the swings.
[Spoon clinks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela stirs her tea as Rita watches, smiling.
ANGELA: You must be very proud.
[Saucers clink]
DESCRIPTION: Rita stops smiling. Later, Rita picks up a tray with the teapot, cups, and a bowl from the tabletop. Angela wears her coat and ties her scarf.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And being British, they'd have to talk about the weather.
ANGELA: It's been lovely this week.
[Dishes clatter]
RITA: But I hear there's a big storm on its way.
ANGELA: Oh, doesn't look like it.
RITA: But when are weather forecasters ever wrong?
[Angela and Rita laugh]
RITA: Anyway, see ya tomorrow?
[Footsteps patter]
DESCRIPTION: Angela waves and leaves.
ANGELA: Definitely.
[Wind gusts, thunder rumbles]
DESCRIPTION: That night, thick grey clouds blow past the full moon as trees sway in the wind.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But it turns out that weather forecasters are sometimes right.
[Wind howls, grey-haired man whimpers]
DESCRIPTION: Angela squeezes her eyes shut as she walks against the wind. The grey-haired man holds his newspaper open and stumbles past her in the opposite direction.
ANGELA: Oh!
[Newspaper rustles, grey-haired man whimpers, wind howls, curtain hooks scrape]
DESCRIPTION: At home, Angela closes her bedroom curtains.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: By the time Angela went to bed, the storm was raging and roaring like...
[Wind howls, grey-haired man whimpers, Angela chuckles, curtains rattle]
DESCRIPTION: On the sidewalk, the grey-haired man holding the newspaper blows past Angela’s house.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Like an angry bear.
[Wind howls, crow squawks, thunder booms, bell dings, upbeat music continues]
DESCRIPTION: A crow blows past Angela’s window. Inside, she sits on the edge of her bed, holding Enid. She puts Enid on the nightstand and stands.
ANGELA: Ooh! It's windier than a baked bean's bottom out there, Enid. I'll never sleep with that racket. I need something to distract me.
[Door squeaks, thunder rumbles, rustling, Angela grunts, phonograph bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens a closet and carries the phonograph to the nightstand by the wall.
ANGELA: There we go.
[Static crackles, exciting phonograph music plays, Enid rattles, wind howls, trashcan clangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a second phonograph beside Enid on the other nightstand. Angela plays a record on each phonograph, lies under the covers in bed between them, and falls asleep. Outside, a trashcan blows down the street.
[Enid rings, the music stops, muffled rattling]
DESCRIPTION: The next morning, Angela hits the button on top of Enid, then picks the clock up.
ANGELA: Good morning, Enid. And good riddance to that storm.
[Enid rattles, bird chirps, door opens, Angela sniffs, sighs, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela steps into her backyard.
ANGELA: Oh!
[Crow caws]
DESCRIPTION: Wilhelmina lies on a broken wooden fence, and leaves lie scattered across the grass. A chair and the table are tipped, and flowers sag with broken stalks. Angela puts her hands on her hips and smiles.
ANGELA: Hm, I'd been meaning to plant new things anyway.
[Angela hums, upbeat music plays, door slams, cupboard squeaks, biscuit packages crinkle]
DESCRIPTION: Angela enters the house and opens a kitchen cupboard. She removes two packages of biscuits and puts them into her bag.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Despite the damage the storm had done to the garden, her day continued normally, though, without any fruit or veg to cook, Angela had to find treats in her cupboards for Rita and the boys.
[Angela hums, duck quacks, footsteps patter, grass rustles, duck slurps, ducks quack]
DESCRIPTION: In the park, Angela walks past broken branches scattered on the grass. She walks past the two ducks, and one eats a worm. The ducks rush to the grass beside Angela and open their mouths wide.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But as Angela went to Rita's house, something not normal and life-changing happened.
[Angela hums, bird chirps loudly]
DESCRIPTION: Angela stops walking and looks around. She follows the chirping into the tall grass.
ANGELA: Hm? Hm? Hm.
[Bird chirps, grass rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes grass apart and discovers the red bird.
ANGELA: Ah!
[Bird chirps sadly]
ANGELA: Ah.
[Bird chirps sadly]
ANGELA: Oh, hello. Who are you? Did the storm blow you out of your nest, you poor thing?
[Bird chirps]
ANGELA: Where are your mummy and daddy?
[Bird chirps weakly]
DESCRIPTION: Angela looks around.
ANGELA: Oh. There are no trees around us. That storm must've blown you out of a nest far from here.
[Bird chirps and squawks]
ANGELA: Oh, are you hungry?
[Package rustles, bird chirps, gulps, chirps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela feeds the bird a biscuit.
ANGELA: Right, well, I've got to get going. I'm sure your parents will find you soon. Good luck, little bird.
[Footsteps rustle, bird chirps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela walks away from the bird. She walks on the dirt path, then turns around and finds the red bird following her.
ANGELA: Oh, no. You have to stay here, little one. Don't worry. I'm sure you—
[Bell rings, exciting music plays, Angela gasps, bird screeches]
DESCRIPTION: A bicyclist passes Angela and the bird on the path.
ANGELA: Oh, dear.
[Fox growls, dramatic music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In tall grass nearby, a fox snarls at the bird.
ANGELA: Oh!
[Rat squeaks, crow caws]
DESCRIPTION: A rat beneath a bench nearby drops a biscuit and stares menacingly at the bird. A crow lands on a nearby tree branch.
ANGELA: Ah!
[Red bird chirps, bell rings, Angela gasps]
DESCRIPTION: A bicyclist rides between Angela and the red bird.
ANGELA: No, I can't leave you here to be eaten or squashed. Or both. Mm-hm.
[Gentle music plays, bag rustles, Angela hums, footsteps patter]
DESCRIPTION: Angela picks up the bird, puts them in her bag, and walks back along the dirt path.
[Distant barking, the music stops, Angela hums]
DESCRIPTION: At home, Angela opens her bag on the kitchen table.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And so, Angela took the bird home, which she really shouldn't have done, but she meant well, and it had been in danger, and this is just a story.
[Rustling, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela takes the bird out of the bag and cradles them in the crook of her left arm. She peers into the bag.
ANGELA: Eaten everything, have you? You must've been hungry. And you're still half featherless. You must be freezing.
[Scarf rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts the bird on the table. She takes off her scarf and wraps it around the red bird.
ANGELA: Oh, what about this scarf Uncle Jasper knitted for me last Christmas? And this jumper that Auntie Doreen gave me last birthday?
[Bird squawks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a beige sweater on the bird, with their head poking through the neck. She wraps a pink cardigan around the bird.
ANGELA: And this cardigan that... Well, actually, I have no idea where this cardigan came from, but have it anyway.
[Bird peeps]
DESCRIPTION: The bird, swaddled in clothes, tips over.
ANGELA: Oh! Ah!
[Rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sits the bird on the table.
ANGELA: Dear! Can't have you falling off like that. We need somewhere safe for you to sit.
[Angela mutters, items clatter, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela kneels on the floor and searches through a cupboard, throwing a rolling pin, a can, a toaster, and a pan over her shoulder.
ANGELA: Ah!
[Footsteps patter, bird peeps, rustling, plopping, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a blue basket on the table and puts the swaddled bird in it. Angela takes off her gloves.
ANGELA: Oh! Perfect. Now, you need a name, so I shall call you "Augustus" because I found you in August. If I'd found you last month, I'd have called you Julian. And if it was February, no idea what I would've called you.
[String stretches]
DESCRIPTION: The bird, Augustus, pulls on a string.
ANGELA: Ah, ah, ah, no, no, you don't eat scarves. Unless you're a moth.
[Augustus chirps]
ANGELA: Oh, still hungry, are we?
[Angela inhales deeply]
ANGELA: Hm.
[Angela gasps]
ANGELA: Ah!
[Cupboard squeaks, lid rustles, munching]
DESCRIPTION: Angela takes a biscuit box out of the cupboard and opens it. She drops biscuits into the bird’s mouth.
ANGELA: Yummy biscuits. All different sorts. Let's see which you like. Mm. Hm. Oh.
[Angela tuts, bird screeches]
ANGELA: Oh. So, "no" to custard creams.
[Phone rings, the music stops, footsteps patter, phone rattles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a custard cream biscuit back into the box, puts the box on the table beside Augustus, and then answers the phone attached to the kitchen wall.
ANGELA: Hello? Rita, hello.
DESCRIPTION: Angela and Rita appear on a split screen. Rita sits at her kitchen table.
RITA: You okay, Angela? We were expecting you, but you didn't turn up.
[Light music plays]
ANGELA: Sorry. I should've let you know. I've made a new friend. In the park.
RITA: Oh!
[Angela chuckles]
ANGELA: His name's Augustus. I'll bring him 'round tomorrow so you can meet him.
[Bird screeches, clanging]
ANGELA: Oh, got to go!
[Phone thuds, Augustus peeps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela hangs up and runs to the table where Augustus’s beak sticks together. She picks up the open box of biscuits.
ANGELA: And that's also a "no" to caramel.
[Enid ticks, Augustus peeps, Enid rattles
DESCRIPTION: Day turns to night, and Augustus’s basket sits on the nightstand beside Enid. Augustus grabs Enid.
ANGELA: Oh! No, Augustus, we don't eat Enid. Let go of her, please.
[Enid rings]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pulls Enid free and puts it on the nightstand. Angela sits on the edge of her bed and tickles Augustus under his beak.
ANGELA: Good boy. Who's a loveykins, eh? Who's my Loveykins?
DESCRIPTION: Augustus looks around, then looks at Enid.
[Enid ticks, Augustus peeps, gentle music plays]
ANGELA: Yes, you are. Good night, Loveykins.
[Light chain clicks, Angela snores, Augustus peeps, Enid rattles, Augustus screeches, thumps, door opens, Angela hums]
DESCRIPTION: Angela turns off the light and falls asleep. Augustus picks up Enid and chews her. The next morning, Augustus awakens and looks around, wide-eyed. Angela’s bed is empty, and a spider lowers themselves on a silk strand beside the bird. Augustus bounces the basket forward towards the spider, and the basket falls on the bed, then rolls onto the floor. Angela enters the room and stops when she notices Augustus and the basket on the floor.
[The music stops, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts Augustus back into the basket.
ANGELA: Oh, my poor Loveykins! I am so sorry I wasn't here to catch you. But it's because I went to get you a little present.
[Footsteps rustle, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela covers Augustus’s eyes and carries the basket to a baby buggy in the kitchen. She uncovers his eyes.
ANGELA: Ta-da! This is your bird buggy.
[Augustus peeps, belt clicks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela picks Augustus, still swaddled, up out of the basket and places him in the buggy. She wraps a blanket around him, then fastens a seatbelt.
ANGELA: Now, just wrap you up nice and warm.
[Angela hums, buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the bird buggy out of the kitchen.
ANGELA: And off we go to see Rita and the boys.
[Duck quacks, water splashes, Angela hums, buggy squeaks, wings flap]
DESCRIPTION: In the park, a mallard duck jumps off a small island in the pond and swims. Angela pushes the bird buggy past the ducks on the shore, and the mallard narrows their eyes as they look at Augustus. Angela sits on the log across from the duck pond with the bird buggy parked beside her.
ANGELA: Good morning, my ducky chums.
[Duck quacks, buggy squeaks, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford walks on the path pushing her baby buggy.
ANGELA: And good morning, Mrs. Twyford.
[The music stops, buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford pushes her buggy past the bird buggy, open-mouthed.
MRS. TWYFORD: And people think I'm the odd one.
[Wellington barks, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela waves to Gerald, Harold, and Wellington.
ANGELA: Morning, lads.
MAN IN BROWN TURTLENECK: Hello, Angela.
[The music stops, birds chirp]
ANGELA: Just off to introduce Rita and the boys to Augustus here, my Loveykins.
[Gerald and Harold gasp, mellow music plays, Wellington sniffs, barks]
DESCRIPTION: The two men glance at each other. Wellington sniffs Augustus and stands with his front paws on the buggy.
[Augustus squawks]
MAN IN BROWN TURTLENECK: Oh.
[Angela gasps, Wellington barks, ducks quack]
DESCRIPTION: The man wearing the brown turtleneck lifts Wellington away from Augustus and puts him on the path. Wellington runs ahead on the path as Angela leans over the buggy.
ANGELA: Ooh! Oh, his first word!
DESCRIPTION: Angela tickles Augustus under his beak.
ANGELA: Who's a clever Loveykins?
[Augustus screeches]
ANGELA: Yes, you are.
[Angela chuckles, the music stops, clears her throat, Wellington sniffs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela taps the top of Augustus’s beak. She looks at the two men, then stands. Wellington sniffs the shore by the pond.
ANGELA: Right, must get on. Bah-doo.
[Buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the bird buggy past the two men. After she passes, they look at each other.
MAN IN BLUE TURTLENECK: "Loveykins?"
[Tray scrapes, buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: The man wearing the brown turtleneck shrugs. In a store window, a man pushes a tray to the side and adds a new tray to the display.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Since Augustus had eaten everything in the house, Angela had to buy treats to take to Rita's, and since her Loveykins was going to eat them too...
[Augustus chirps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes Augustus past the store window.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Only the best would do, so she went to the town's Italian deli.
[Door opens, bell jangles, door closes, light music plays, package rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens the deli door and pushes the bird buggy inside. She takes a package of biscuits off a high shelf.

DESCRIPTION: Augustus picks up a can of fish from a lower shelf and squeezes it in his beak. He drops it, and it rolls to the floor. Augustus lifts a large bottle off a shelf, holding it by the cork. The cork slides out and the bottle breaks on the floor. Angela stops beside a stack of bags and Augustus strains towards the bags. He pulls one out from near the bottom of the stack and a second bag falls on the floor. Angela takes the bag from Augustus’s beak and pushes the buggy up the aisle.
ANGELA: Oh, parmesan! Good idea.
[Bags thud, jar clinks, spider footsteps patter, Augustus peeps, beak snaps, Angela hums, gentle music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Most of the stacked bags fall on the floor. Angela takes a jar off a shelf and looks at the label. On a nearby barrel, a beetle skitters. Augustus smiles and snaps at the insect.
ANGELA: I know. Glazed figs, so yummy.
[Augustus peeps, beak snaps, buggy creaks, tap]
DESCRIPTION: The beetle skitters across the barrel, away from Augustus. Augustus leans forward, the buggy slowly tips, and Angela grabs it.
ANGELA: Oh, Loveykins!
[Angela breathes deeply]
ANGELA: You nearly fell out. Did the nasty beetle scare you?
[Augustus peeps]
ANGELA: Poor Loveykins.
[Buggy squeaks, jars clink, footsteps thunk]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the bird buggy away from the barrel to where a man stocks jars on a shelf.
ANGELA: Good morning, Tommaso. I'll take this little lot, please. It's for my Loveykins here.
[The music stops, bag rustles]
DESCRIPTION: The man, Tomasso, descends the ladder and stands at the checkout counter. He looks over the counter at Augustus, and then touches the parmesan bag in Angela’s shopping basket.
TOMASSO: Uh, Angela, is this the right food to feed a bird?
[Light music plays]
ANGELA: What's wrong with it?
TOMASSO: Well, shouldn't birds eat things like seeds or worms?
ANGELA: He needs biscuits just like me.
[Angela clears her throat]
ANGELA: And will you give me two kilos of that tiramisu, please?
[Bowl scrapes]
DESCRIPTION: Tomasso walks to a display cabinet. In Rita’s kitchen, Angela pulls a bowl of tiramisu to Augustus, who sits swaddled at the table.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: So, Angela took Augustus to meet Rita, and Cyril, and Cedric. They were all surprised but also delighted that Angela had a new friend.
[Children laugh, upbeat music plays]
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Though Rita shared the same reservations Tommaso did about Augustus' diet.
[Spoon clinks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sits down and stirs her tea.
RITA: Um, is tiramisu good for birds?
ANGELA: Of course. Look how much he loves it.
[Boys laugh, Angela sips Augustus peeps, bowl shatters, younger red-haired boy gasps, older red-haired boy laughs, plate clatters]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sips her tea as Augustus holds the bowl upside down in his beak and eats the cake. Augustus eats the younger red-haired boy’s tiramisu, then eats the older boy’s cake.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Uh... Ah?
RITA: Yes.
[Toy clatters, thunk]
DESCRIPTION: The younger boy and Augustus pull a toy rocket ship between them.
YOUNGER RED-HAIRED BOY: Ow! Ooh, ow! Ooh, get off!
[Augustus gulps, burps, metal clatters]
DESCRIPTION: The younger boy lets go. Augustus swallows the rocket ship, then spits out the pieces.
YOUNGER RED-HAIRED BOY: Aw.
[Younger child cries, toy clatters, Angela laughs]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus looks at a toy brontosaurus, and the older boy wraps his arms around it. Rita sits open-mouthed as Angela smiles.
ANGELA: Look at them playing so nicely together.
[Angela sips, Angela sighs happily]
DESCRIPTION: Rita watches Angela sip her tea.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Soon, the little bird wasn't so little anymore.
[Augustus screeches, basket creaks, dishes clatter, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In Angela’s kitchen, Augustus sits swaddled in the basket as Angela washes dishes and places them in a drying rack.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But as Augustus grew, he and Angela slipped into a happy routine. He even helped her with chores around the house.
[Augustus chirps, brush scrapes, upbeat music plays, dish clatters]
DESCRIPTION: Angela holds a soapy plate in front of Augustus, and he picks up a brush and scrubs it. Angela takes the plate away and pats Augustus’s head.
ANGELA: Such a helpful Loveykins.
[Water splashes, brush scrapes, dishes clatter, Augustus screeches, beak snaps, spider screams, Augustus screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Angela washes dishes and Augustus scrubs them with the brush. A spider lowers in front of Augustus, and he drops the brush, snapping at the insect. Augustus snaps the web, smiles, and throws the spider into the air. Augustus opens his beak wide and smiles. Angela grabs the falling spider and waggles her finger at Augustus.
ANGELA: Oh! No, nothing horrid like that for my Loveykins.
[Augustus screeches sadly]
DESCRIPTION: Angela offers Augustus a chocolate éclair.
ANGELA: If you're hungry, you must have something delicious.
[Augustus screeches, munches, gulps, basket creaks]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus gobbles the éclair and grows.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Augustus also helped Angela in the garden.
[Leaves rustle, Angela hums, crunching, Angela chuckles, upbeat music continues]
DESCRIPTION: In the garden, Angela rakes leaves while Augustus sits swaddled in the basket and watches a worm crawl on a leaf. Augustus grabs the worm and leaves from the bush.
ANGELA: Oh, is my Loveykins trying to help?
[Augustus gulps, hand pats, Augustus coughs]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus swallows the worm and the leaves, then Angela picks him up and pats his back. Augustus coughs out the worm.
ANGELA: Nothing horrid like worms. Right, time for planting.
[Angela hums, the music stops, plants rustle, Augustus screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Angela plants a flower in a flower bed.
ANGELA: Oh, a duet with my Loveykins.
[Augustus squawks, Angela hums, rustling, crunching, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes her crate of starter plants along the ground. Behind her, Augustus bounces in the basket and eats the newly planted flowers.
ANGELA SINGS: Oh, my Loveykins.
[Angela hums, crunching, Augustus squawks]
ANGELA SINGS: Oh, my love, my Loveykins.
[Crunching]
DESCRIPTION: Angela looks at Augustus, then glances at the flowerbed.
ANGELA: Hm?
[Augustus trills]
DESCRIPTION: Angela smiles at Augustus.
ANGELA: Didn't I feed you enough for breakfast?
[Angela inhales deeply, grunts, footsteps rustle, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela stands and walks away.
ANGELA: I'll get you a snack.
[Basket creaks, snaps]
DESCRIPTION: The basket breaks.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Augustus kept growing and growing.
[Children mumble, Augustus chews, screeches]
DESCRIPTION: In Rita’s kitchen, Angela and Rita watch as Augustus finishes his food and lunges towards the younger red-haired boy’s plate. The boy uses both hands to hold Augustus back.
ANGELA: Get off. No, that's mine.
[Augustus screeches, gulps, munches, screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus eats the younger boy’s food, then eats the older boy’s food.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Mum!
[Angela chuckles, Augustus chirps, squawks]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus leans towards the older boy, who picks up his brontosaurus toy and narrows his eyes at Augustus.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: No, you don't.
[Augustus chirps, squawks, hopping, Augustus screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus, swaddled, bounces to the older boy and grabs the boy’s head in his beak.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Ow!
[Spoon clinks]
DESCRIPTION: Rita puts down her spoon and stands.
RITA: No, let him go.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Mum, he's trying to eat me!
[The younger boy sobs]
ANGELA: Clearly didn't give him enough cake.
RITA: Mm.
[Slurping, teacup and saucer clink]
DESCRIPTION: In her backyard, Angela sits across from Augustus at the patio set. In the bird buggy, Augustus has a blanket tied around him and a small pink umbrella over his head. Angela sips from her teacup, then puts it on the table with cake, cupcakes, and biscuits.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: After agreeing that perhaps it was best if they didn't visit Rita and the boys for a bit, Angela and Augustus stayed at home where he kept growing...
[Augustus munches, gulps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela feeds Augustus biscuits.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And growing, until one day...
[Straps strain, metal clangs]
DESCRIPTION: In the backyard, Angela sits on a patio chair, and Augustus sits swaddled in the bird buggy. The buggy breaks and Angela startles, falling backwards.
ANGELA: Oh, oh!
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: His buggy burst.
ANGELA: Oh.
[Augustus screeches, crunching, rustling, light music plays, birds sing]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus rolls onto his left side and eats a passing worm. Angela stands Augustus up and looks into his eyes.
ANGELA: Oh, my poor Loveykins. You mustn't eat worms. Unless... You don't prefer worms to the food I give you, do you?
[Muffled screeching sadly, upbeat music plays, wheelbarrow squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes Augustus to the back door in a wheelbarrow.
ANGELA: Of course you don't. That would be silly. Now, let's get you inside. Give you some nice cake to take away the taste of that horrid worm.
[Wheelbarrow squeaks, thuds, Angela grunts]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the wheelbarrow and the edges of Augustus’s swaddle against the doorframe.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But after all his growing, Augustus was now too big to get back into the house...
[Wheelbarrow bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes her back against the wheelbarrow, then drops it.
ANGELA: Oopsie.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: So, Angela came up with a new plan.
[Saw grinds, hammer bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela builds a shed.
ANGELA: Ta-da! A special house for my special Loveykins.
[Door creaks, wheelbarrow squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens the shed door.
ANGELA: You're growing up. You need your own space, so here it is. With your name on it.
[Sign Reads] Augustus, my Loveykins.
[Augustus squawks, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela and Augustus look at the sign over the door, then she pushes the wheelbarrow into the shed.
ANGELA: I know. Lovely, isn't it?
[Augustus squawks]
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But then, one day...
[Angela hums, birds chirp, wind gusts, thunder crackles, tense music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In the garden, Angela waters flowers while Augustus sits in the wheelbarrow and watches.
ANGELA: Ooh. Oh, looks like there's a storm come. Best get you inside.
[Wind gusts, wheelbarrow squeaks, phonograph bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the wheelbarrow into the shed and then runs back to the house. She returns to the shed carrying a phonograph and puts it on a small table.
ANGELA: Hup. And in case the wind scares you...
[Static hisses, phonograph music plays, door closes, wind howls]
DESCRIPTION: Angela starts a record, then runs back towards the house.
ANGELA: Good night, Loveykins.
[Wind cranks, rain patters]
DESCRIPTION: In her bedroom, Angela sits on the edge of her bed and winds Enid. She puts the clock down beside the phonograph on her nightstand.
ANGELA: Good night, Enid.
[Phonograph music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts the needle on the record and lies in her bed.
ANGELA: Oh, I hope my Loveykins isn't too frightened.
[Light clicks, thunder booms, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Angela turns off her lamp. Lightning flashes and she pulls the covers up to her eyes.
[The music stops, distant dog barks, robin sings, wings flap, dishes clink]
DESCRIPTION: Night turns into day, and the sky clears. Outside, a robin takes off from a treetop. In the kitchen, Angela puts a mug and a bowl of croissants on a tray and carries them into the hallway.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But when Angela went to take Augustus his breakfast...
[Door creaks, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela backs through the door, carrying the tray.
ANGELA: Here we are, my Loveykins. Some delicious croissants with--
[Angela gasps, exciting music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela stands wide-eyed and open-mouthed as she stares at the smashed shed. Augustus perches on top of a broken board, out of his swaddle.
ANGELA: Loveykins.
[Dishes clatter, Augustus screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus spreads his wings.
ANGELA: Are you going...
[Angela sighs, thumps, wings whoosh, birds chirp, soft music plays, Augustus squawks, fabric rustles, trills, chirps, whooshing, wings flap, Angela whimpers]
DESCRIPTION: Angela faints. Augustus brings the blanket and sash to Angela. He covers her up and ties the blue sash in a bow. Augustus rests his cheek against Angela, then looks up at the sky. Augustus takes off, soaring over the town. In her backyard, Angela awakens and holds her hand against the side of her head.
ANGELA: Oh.
[Blanket rustles, Angela whimpers, footsteps rustle, sign scrapes]
DESCRIPTION: Angela throws off the blanket, stands, and runs across the backyard. She picks up the shed sign.
ANGELA: Oh, my Loveykins.
[Angela cries, Augustus screeches, wings flap, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus soars across the sky.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But if Angela was sad, which was fair enough, Augustus was having a great time, soaring through the skies, enjoying his freedom...
[Augustus screeches, birds chirp, insects skitter, crunching]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus swoops down into a forest and lands on a branch. He eats a beetle skittering on the trunk, then eats another insect off the branch.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And, best of all, enjoying some proper fine dining. Bird style.
[Augustus screeches, upbeat music plays, hammer bangs, ladder creaks, grass rustles]
DESCRIPTION: In her backyard, Angela hammers the roof of a shed. She descends a ladder, and then gazes at the shed, smiling with her left hand resting on her hip.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: As for Angela, it took her quite a while to recover from her shock. But eventually, she rebuilt her shed, and instead of filling it with Augustus...
[Sign clatters, Angela laughs, hums, water drips, duster rustles, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela hangs the “Augustus my Loveykins” sign over the shed door. Inside, Angela pours a single drop of water into a cactus and dusts it with a feather duster. Two framed photos of Augustus hang on the wall near the door.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: She filled it with cactuses, or "cacti," if you're feeling clever and Latin-y. And she restarted her rests in the park.
[Ducks quack, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: In the park, Angela sits on the log across from the duck pond. The two ducks approach her, and she looks furtively left and right.
ANGELA: Here. Have some seeds.
[Ducks quack, seeds rattle]
DESCRIPTION: Angela throws a handful of seeds on the shore.
ANGELA: Shh, shh, shh. Don't tell anyone.
[Robin chirps]
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Then, one day...
[Mellow music plays, page rustles, Augustus screeches, uplifting music plays, wings flap, door bangs]
DESCRIPTION: In her backyard, Angela relaxes on a patio chair, reading a book. Angela glances up, then lifts her sunglasses. Augustus perches on top of the shed, and Angela drops her book and runs to him. She leans against the closed shed door.
ANGELA: Ah! Loveykins! Oh, my Loveykins does love me.
[Augustus chirps, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus leans down with a dead mouse dangling from his beak.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And so now, every so often, when she's least expecting it, she'll get another visit. And to repay her for all the treats she gave him, Augustus always brings Angela a treat of her own.
[Rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela catches the mouse.
ANGELA: Oh, how lovely. I'll save it for later.
[Augustus screeches, Angela chuckles, Augustus trills]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus smiles and spreads his wings. He leans down, and Angela rubs the bottom of his beak. They put their cheeks together.

ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Her name was Angela Bowling, and each day she woke early thanks to her trusty alarm clock, Enid.

DESCRIPTION: On a nightstand, Enid shakes.

DESCRIPTION: Angela picks Enid up, pushes the button on top, and puts Enid back on the nightstand.
ANGELA: Morning, Enid. Good girl.

DESCRIPTION: Beside the bed, Angela stretches and jogs in place.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: No snooze button, or "Just five more minutes," for Angela, because she was a woman of action, with a strict routine. Each morning, she got up...
[Scraping]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens her drapes and discovers an orange and white butterfly fluttering outside.
ANGELA: Good morning, world!
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Then hurried, hastened, and headed to her beloved garden...
[Door opens, Angela sniffs, serene music plays, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens her door and steps outside.
ANGELA: And, good morning, garden.
[Birds chirp, serene music continues, water splashes]
DESCRIPTION: Butterflies flutter across Angela’s flowering backyard garden. A stone patio halfway across the yard has a wrought iron table with two chairs. Angela waters a plant.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Where she checked on her plants...
ANGELA: Well done, you lot. Soon be blooming. Ah!
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Banished weeds...
[Angela tuts]
DESCRIPTION: Angela plucks a weed out of a flower bed and drops it on the soil.
ANGELA: Be gone, you invasive miscreant.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And harvested any fruit or vegetables that were ripe.
[Birds chirp, worm rustles]
DESCRIPTION: A worm inches along a branch on a pear tree.
ANGELA: Morning, Wilhelmina. You look ready to drop. Shall I give you a hand?
[Leaves rustle]
DESCRIPTION: Angela shakes the pear tree, Wilhelmina, then holds a basket beneath it.
ANGELA: Hm.
[Thumping, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: Angela nudges the tree with her hip and pears fall into her basket.
ANGELA: Ah! Good work, Wilhemina.
[Birds chirp, grass rustles, thump, upbeat music plays, peeler squeaks, knife chops, liquid splashes, slurping, oven door creaks, pan rattles, oven door slams, Angela exclaims]
DESCRIPTION: Angela carries the basket away from the tree, and a pear falls to the ground. In her kitchen, she peels a pear, then chops four on a wooden cutting board. Angela pours liquid into a bowl and stirs it. Angela uses a spoon and samples liquid from a pot on the stove. She puts a baking tray in the oven. Later, Angela puts the baking tray on the table, picks up a biscuit, then drops it and blows on her hand.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And then, she'd cook what she'd harvested. Angela loved cooking. All the peeling, and slicing, and dicing, then the folding, and mixing, and fixing, and finally, the boiling, and baking, and all 'round making, because it meant that when she went on one of her regular visits to see her friend Rita, and her sons Cyril and Cedric, she could take them homegrown, homemade deliciousness.
[Picture rustles, bag rustles, door opens]
DESCRIPTION: Angela straightens a picture of Rita, Cyril, and Cedric, who all have short red hair. Angela nods, then puts a reusable bag on the table. Angela leaves her house carrying two bags, and a man lifts his hat as he walks past on the sidewalk.
MAN: Mornin'.
[The music stops, footsteps patter, water splashes]
DESCRIPTION: In a park, a duck dives into a pond. Angela walks to a log beside a dirt path.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: It was a long way to Rita's house, so Angela would always stop for a rest in the park...
[Birds chirp, bags rustle, Angela sighs, insects chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sits.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Where she'd see her other friends.
[Upbeat music plays, jars clink]
DESCRIPTION: Angela waves to a woman with long blonde hair who pushes a baby buggy filled with stuffed animals. Angela takes a jar out of her bag.
ANGELA: Morning, Miss Twyford. I've made some lovely pear jam for you and your dollies.
MRS. TWYFORD: Hmph! Not "dollies!" "Children."
ANGELA: Sorry, children, yes. Definitely. Anyway, jam a-hoy.
[Lid scrapes]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford takes the jar, glaring at Angela. She opens it, dips her finger in, and tastes the jam.

DESCRIPTION: Two ducks stand on the shore by the pond and watch Angela. She picks up her bag and walks away.
ANGELA: Oh, sorry, ducks. Nothing for you, I'm afraid.
[Duck quacks, upbeat music continues, teacup scrapes, teapot rattles, children exclaim]
DESCRIPTION: The ducks look at a sign that features a line striking through a picture of a person feeding a duck. In Rita’s kitchen, Rita pours tea for Angela at the kitchen table. Rita sits beside Angela, and Cyril and Cedric draw at the other end of the table.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Once she got to Rita's, Angela and Rita would always enjoy a nice cup of tea, a lovely slice of cake, and a good chat. They'd talk about the news...

DESCRIPTION: On the sidewalk, the grey-haired man holding the newspaper blows past Angela’s house.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Like an angry bear.
[Wind howls, crow squawks, thunder booms, bell dings, upbeat music continues]
DESCRIPTION: A crow blows past Angela’s window. Inside, she sits on the edge of her bed, holding Enid. She puts Enid on the nightstand and stands.
ANGELA: Ooh! It's windier than a baked bean's bottom out there, Enid. I'll never sleep with that racket. I need something to distract me.
[Door squeaks, thunder rumbles, rustling, Angela grunts, phonograph bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens a closet and carries the phonograph to the nightstand by the wall.
ANGELA: There we go.
[Static crackles, exciting phonograph music plays, Enid rattles, wind howls, trashcan clangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a second phonograph beside Enid on the other nightstand. Angela plays a record on each phonograph, lies under the covers in bed between them, and falls asleep. Outside, a trashcan blows down the street.
[Enid rings, the music stops, muffled rattling]
DESCRIPTION: The next morning, Angela hits the button on top of Enid, then picks the clock up.
ANGELA: Good morning, Enid. And good riddance to that storm.
[Enid rattles, bird chirps, door opens, Angela sniffs, sighs, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela steps into her backyard.
ANGELA: Oh!
[Crow caws]
DESCRIPTION: Wilhelmina lies on a broken wooden fence, and leaves lie scattered across the grass. A chair and the table are tipped, and flowers sag with broken stalks. Angela puts her hands on her hips and smiles.
ANGELA: Hm, I'd been meaning to plant new things anyway.
[Angela hums, upbeat music plays, door slams, cupboard squeaks, biscuit packages crinkle]
DESCRIPTION: Angela enters the house and opens a kitchen cupboard. She removes two packages of biscuits and puts them into her bag.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Despite the damage the storm had done to the garden, her day continued normally, though, without any fruit or veg to cook, Angela had to find treats in her cupboards for Rita and the boys.
[Angela hums, duck quacks, footsteps patter, grass rustles, duck slurps, ducks quack]
DESCRIPTION: In the park, Angela walks past broken branches scattered on the grass. She walks past the two ducks, and one eats a worm. The ducks rush to the grass beside Angela and open their mouths wide.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But as Angela went to Rita's house, something not normal and life-changing happened.
[Angela hums, bird chirps loudly]
DESCRIPTION: Angela stops walking and looks around. She follows the chirping into the tall grass.
ANGELA: Hm? Hm? Hm.
[Bird chirps, grass rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes grass apart and discovers the red bird.
ANGELA: Ah!
[Bird chirps sadly]
ANGELA: Ah.
[Bird chirps sadly]
ANGELA: Oh, hello. Who are you? Did the storm blow you out of your nest, you poor thing?
[Bird chirps]
ANGELA: Where are your mummy and daddy?
[Bird chirps weakly]
DESCRIPTION: Angela looks around.
ANGELA: Oh. There are no trees around us. That storm must've blown you out of a nest far from here.
[Bird chirps and squawks]
ANGELA: Oh, are you hungry?
[Package rustles, bird chirps, gulps, chirps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela feeds the bird a biscuit.
ANGELA: Right, well, I've got to get going. I'm sure your parents will find you soon. Good luck, little bird.
[Footsteps rustle, bird chirps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela walks away from the bird. She walks on the dirt path, then turns around and finds the red bird following her.
ANGELA: Oh, no. You have to stay here, little one. Don't worry. I'm sure you—
[Bell rings, exciting music plays, Angela gasps, bird screeches]
DESCRIPTION: A bicyclist passes Angela and the bird on the path.

DESCRIPTION: Angela picks up the bird, puts them in her bag, and walks back along the dirt path.
[Distant barking, the music stops, Angela hums]
DESCRIPTION: At home, Angela opens her bag on the kitchen table.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And so, Angela took the bird home, which she really shouldn't have done, but she meant well, and it had been in danger, and this is just a story.
[Rustling, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela takes the bird out of the bag and cradles them in the crook of her left arm. She peers into the bag.
ANGELA: Eaten everything, have you? You must've been hungry. And you're still half featherless. You must be freezing.
[Scarf rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts the bird on the table. She takes off her scarf and wraps it around the red bird.
ANGELA: Oh, what about this scarf Uncle Jasper knitted for me last Christmas? And this jumper that Auntie Doreen gave me last birthday?
[Bird squawks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a beige sweater on the bird, with their head poking through the neck. She wraps a pink cardigan around the bird.
ANGELA: And this cardigan that... Well, actually, I have no idea where this cardigan came from, but have it anyway.
[Bird peeps]
DESCRIPTION: The bird, swaddled in clothes, tips over.
ANGELA: Oh! Ah!
[Rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sits the bird on the table.
ANGELA: Dear! Can't have you falling off like that. We need somewhere safe for you to sit.
[Angela mutters, items clatter, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela kneels on the floor and searches through a cupboard, throwing a rolling pin, a can, a toaster, and a pan over her shoulder.

[Footsteps patter, bird peeps, rustling, plopping, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a blue basket on the table and puts the swaddled bird in it. Angela takes off her gloves.
ANGELA: Oh! Perfect. Now, you need a name, so I shall call you "Augustus" because I found you in August. If I'd found you last month, I'd have called you Julian. And if it was February, no idea what I would've called you.
[String stretches]
DESCRIPTION: The bird, Augustus, pulls on a string.
ANGELA: Ah, ah, ah, no, no, you don't eat scarves. Unless you're a moth.
[Augustus chirps]
ANGELA: Oh, still hungry, are we?
[Angela inhales deeply]

[Angela gasps]
ANGELA: Ah!
[Cupboard squeaks, lid rustles, munching]
DESCRIPTION: Angela takes a biscuit box out of the cupboard and opens it. She drops biscuits into the bird’s mouth.
ANGELA: Yummy biscuits. All different sorts. Let's see which you like. Mm. Hm. Oh.
[Angela tuts, bird screeches]
ANGELA: Oh. So, "no" to custard creams.
[Phone rings, the music stops, footsteps patter, phone rattles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts a custard cream biscuit back into the box, puts the box on the table beside Augustus, and then answers the phone attached to the kitchen wall.
ANGELA: Hello? Rita, hello.
DESCRIPTION: Angela and Rita appear on a split screen. Rita sits at her kitchen table.
RITA: You okay, Angela? We were expecting you, but you didn't turn up.
[Light music plays]
ANGELA: Sorry. I should've let you know. I've made a new friend. In the park.
RITA: Oh!
[Angela chuckles]
ANGELA: His name's Augustus. I'll bring him 'round tomorrow so you can meet him.
[Bird screeches, clanging]
ANGELA: Oh, got to go!
[Phone thuds, Augustus peeps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela hangs up and runs to the table where Augustus’s beak sticks together. She picks up the open box of biscuits.
ANGELA: And that's also a "no" to caramel.
[Enid ticks, Augustus peeps, Enid rattles
DESCRIPTION: Day turns to night, and Augustus’s basket sits on the nightstand beside Enid. Augustus grabs Enid.
ANGELA: Oh! No, Augustus, we don't eat Enid. Let go of her, please.
[Enid rings]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pulls Enid free and puts it on the nightstand. Angela sits on the edge of her bed and tickles Augustus under his beak.
ANGELA: Good boy. Who's a loveykins, eh? Who's my Loveykins?
DESCRIPTION: Augustus looks around, then looks at Enid.
[Enid ticks, Augustus peeps, gentle music plays]
ANGELA: Yes, you are. Good night, Loveykins.
[Light chain clicks, Angela snores, Augustus peeps, Enid rattles, Augustus screeches, thumps, door opens, Angela hums]
DESCRIPTION: Angela turns off the light and falls asleep. Augustus picks up Enid and chews her. The next morning, Augustus awakens and looks around, wide-eyed. Angela’s bed is empty, and a spider lowers themselves on a silk strand beside the bird. Augustus bounces the basket forward towards the spider, and the basket falls on the bed, then rolls onto the floor. Angela enters the room and stops when she notices Augustus and the basket on the floor.
[The music stops, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts Augustus back into the basket.
ANGELA: Oh, my poor Loveykins! I am so sorry I wasn't here to catch you. But it's because I went to get you a little present.
[Footsteps rustle, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela covers Augustus’s eyes and carries the basket to a baby buggy in the kitchen. She uncovers his eyes.
ANGELA: Ta-da! This is your bird buggy.
[Augustus peeps, belt clicks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela picks Augustus, still swaddled, up out of the basket and places him in the buggy. She wraps a blanket around him, then fastens a seatbelt.
ANGELA: Now, just wrap you up nice and warm.
[Angela hums, buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the bird buggy out of the kitchen.
ANGELA: And off we go to see Rita and the boys.
[Duck quacks, water splashes, Angela hums, buggy squeaks, wings flap]
DESCRIPTION: In the park, a mallard duck jumps off a small island in the pond and swims. Angela pushes the bird buggy past the ducks on the shore, and the mallard narrows their eyes as they look at Augustus. Angela sits on the log across from the duck pond with the bird buggy parked beside her.
ANGELA: Good morning, my ducky chums.
[Duck quacks, buggy squeaks, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford walks on the path pushing her baby buggy.
ANGELA: And good morning, Mrs. Twyford.
[The music stops, buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Mrs. Twyford pushes her buggy past the bird buggy, open-mouthed.
MRS. TWYFORD: And people think I'm the odd one.
[Wellington barks, light music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela waves to Gerald, Harold, and Wellington.
ANGELA: Morning, lads.
MAN IN BROWN TURTLENECK: Hello, Angela.
[The music stops, birds chirp]
ANGELA: Just off to introduce Rita and the boys to Augustus here, my Loveykins.
[Gerald and Harold gasp, mellow music plays, Wellington sniffs, barks]
DESCRIPTION: The two men glance at each other. Wellington sniffs Augustus and stands with his front paws on the buggy.
[Augustus squawks]
MAN IN BROWN TURTLENECK: Oh.
[Angela gasps, Wellington barks, ducks quack]
DESCRIPTION: The man wearing the brown turtleneck lifts Wellington away from Augustus and puts him on the path. Wellington runs ahead on the path as Angela leans over the buggy.
ANGELA: Ooh! Oh, his first word!
DESCRIPTION: Angela tickles Augustus under his beak.
ANGELA: Who's a clever Loveykins?
[Augustus screeches]
ANGELA: Yes, you are.
[Angela chuckles, the music stops, clears her throat, Wellington sniffs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela taps the top of Augustus’s beak. She looks at the two men, then stands. Wellington sniffs the shore by the pond.
ANGELA: Right, must get on. Bah-doo.
[Buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the bird buggy past the two men. After she passes, they look at each other.
MAN IN BLUE TURTLENECK: "Loveykins?"
[Tray scrapes, buggy squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: The man wearing the brown turtleneck shrugs. In a store window, a man pushes a tray to the side and adds a new tray to the display.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Since Augustus had eaten everything in the house, Angela had to buy treats to take to Rita's, and since her Loveykins was going to eat them too...
[Augustus chirps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes Augustus past the store window.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Only the best would do, so she went to the town's Italian deli.
[Door opens, bell jangles, door closes, light music plays, package rustles]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens the deli door and pushes the bird buggy inside. She takes a package of biscuits off a high shelf.
ANGELA: Oh, um...
[Augustus chirps, metal clangs, buggy squeaks, Augustus chirps, cork pops, glass shatters, liquid splashes, Augustus chirps, screeches, bag rustles, bag thumps]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus picks up a can of fish from a lower shelf and squeezes it in his beak. He drops it, and it rolls to the floor. Augustus lifts a large bottle off a shelf, holding it by the cork. The cork slides out and the bottle breaks on the floor. Angela stops beside a stack of bags and Augustus strains towards the bags. He pulls one out from near the bottom of the stack and a second bag falls on the floor. Angela takes the bag from Augustus’s beak and pushes the buggy up the aisle.
ANGELA: Oh, parmesan! Good idea.
[Bags thud, jar clinks, spider footsteps patter, Augustus peeps, beak snaps, Angela hums, gentle music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Most of the stacked bags fall on the floor. Angela takes a jar off a shelf and looks at the label. On a nearby barrel, a beetle skitters. Augustus smiles and snaps at the insect.
ANGELA: I know. Glazed figs, so yummy.
[Augustus peeps, beak snaps, buggy creaks, tap]
DESCRIPTION: The beetle skitters across the barrel, away from Augustus. Augustus leans forward, the buggy slowly tips, and Angela grabs it.
ANGELA: Oh, Loveykins!
[Angela breathes deeply]
ANGELA: You nearly fell out. Did the nasty beetle scare you?
[Augustus peeps]
ANGELA: Poor Loveykins.
[Buggy squeaks, jars clink, footsteps thunk]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the bird buggy away from the barrel to where a man stocks jars on a shelf.
ANGELA: Good morning, Tommaso. I'll take this little lot, please. It's for my Loveykins here.
[The music stops, bag rustles]
DESCRIPTION: The man, Tomasso, descends the ladder and stands at the checkout counter. He looks over the counter at Augustus, and then touches the parmesan bag in Angela’s shopping basket.
TOMASSO: Uh, Angela, is this the right food to feed a bird?
[Light music plays]
ANGELA: What's wrong with it?
TOMASSO: Well, shouldn't birds eat things like seeds or worms?
ANGELA: He needs biscuits just like me.
[Angela clears her throat]
ANGELA: And will you give me two kilos of that tiramisu, please?
[Bowl scrapes]
DESCRIPTION: Tomasso walks to a display cabinet. In Rita’s kitchen, Angela pulls a bowl of tiramisu to Augustus, who sits swaddled at the table.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: So, Angela took Augustus to meet Rita, and Cyril, and Cedric. They were all surprised but also delighted that Angela had a new friend.
[Children laugh, upbeat music plays]
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Though Rita shared the same reservations Tommaso did about Augustus' diet.
[Spoon clinks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sits down and stirs her tea.
RITA: Um, is tiramisu good for birds?
ANGELA: Of course. Look how much he loves it.
[Boys laugh, Angela sips Augustus peeps, bowl shatters, younger red-haired boy gasps, older red-haired boy laughs, plate clatters]
DESCRIPTION: Angela sips her tea as Augustus holds the bowl upside down in his beak and eats the cake. Augustus eats the younger red-haired boy’s tiramisu, then eats the older boy’s cake.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Uh... Ah?
RITA: Yes.
[Toy clatters, thunk]
DESCRIPTION: The younger boy and Augustus pull a toy rocket ship between them.
YOUNGER RED-HAIRED BOY: Ow! Ooh, ow! Ooh, get off!
[Augustus gulps, burps, metal clatters]
DESCRIPTION: The younger boy lets go. Augustus swallows the rocket ship, then spits out the pieces.
YOUNGER RED-HAIRED BOY: Aw.
[Younger child cries, toy clatters, Angela laughs]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus looks at a toy brontosaurus, and the older boy wraps his arms around it. Rita sits open-mouthed as Angela smiles.
ANGELA: Look at them playing so nicely together.
[Angela sips, Angela sighs happily]
DESCRIPTION: Rita watches Angela sip her tea.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Soon, the little bird wasn't so little anymore.
[Augustus screeches, basket creaks, dishes clatter, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In Angela’s kitchen, Augustus sits swaddled in the basket as Angela washes dishes and places them in a drying rack.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But as Augustus grew, he and Angela slipped into a happy routine. He even helped her with chores around the house.
[Augustus chirps, brush scrapes, upbeat music plays, dish clatters]
DESCRIPTION: Angela holds a soapy plate in front of Augustus, and he picks up a brush and scrubs it. Angela takes the plate away and pats Augustus’s head.
ANGELA: Such a helpful Loveykins.

Augustus snaps the web, smiles, and throws the spider into the air. Augustus opens his beak wide and smiles. Angela grabs the falling spider and waggles her finger at Augustus.
ANGELA: Oh! No, nothing horrid like that for my Loveykins.
[Augustus screeches sadly]
DESCRIPTION: Angela offers Augustus a chocolate éclair.
ANGELA: If you're hungry, you must have something delicious.
[Augustus screeches, munches, gulps, basket creaks]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus gobbles the éclair and grows.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Augustus also helped Angela in the garden.

DESCRIPTION: In the garden, Angela rakes leaves while Augustus sits swaddled in the basket and watches a worm crawl on a leaf. Augustus grabs the worm and leaves from the bush.
ANGELA: Oh, is my Loveykins trying to help?

DESCRIPTION: Augustus swallows the worm and the leaves, then Angela picks him up and pats his back. Augustus coughs out the worm.

[Children mumble, Augustus chews, screeches]
DESCRIPTION: In Rita’s kitchen, Angela and Rita watch as Augustus finishes his food and lunges towards the younger red-haired boy’s plate. The boy uses both hands to hold Augustus back.
ANGELA: Get off. No, that's mine.
[Augustus screeches, gulps, munches, screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus eats the younger boy’s food, then eats the older boy’s food.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Mum!
[Angela chuckles, Augustus chirps, squawks]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus leans towards the older boy, who picks up his brontosaurus toy and narrows his eyes at Augustus.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: No, you don't.
[Augustus chirps, squawks, hopping, Augustus screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus, swaddled, bounces to the older boy and grabs the boy’s head in his beak.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Ow!
[Spoon clinks]
DESCRIPTION: Rita puts down her spoon and stands.
RITA: No, let him go.
OLDER RED-HAIRED BOY: Mum, he's trying to eat me!
[The younger boy sobs]
ANGELA: Clearly didn't give him enough cake.
RITA: Mm.
[Slurping, teacup and saucer clink]
DESCRIPTION: In her backyard, Angela sits across from Augustus at the patio set. In the bird buggy, Augustus has a blanket tied around him and a small pink umbrella over his head. Angela sips from her teacup, then puts it on the table with cake, cupcakes, and biscuits.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: After agreeing that perhaps it was best if they didn't visit Rita and the boys for a bit, Angela and Augustus stayed at home where he kept growing...
[Augustus munches, gulps]
DESCRIPTION: Angela feeds Augustus biscuits.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And growing, until one day...
[Straps strain, metal clangs]
DESCRIPTION: In the backyard, Angela sits on a patio chair, and Augustus sits swaddled in the bird buggy. The buggy breaks and Angela startles, falling backwards.
ANGELA: Oh, oh!
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: His buggy burst.
ANGELA: Oh.
[Augustus screeches, crunching, rustling, light music plays, birds sing]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus rolls onto his left side and eats a passing worm. Angela stands Augustus up and looks into his eyes.
ANGELA: Oh, my poor Loveykins. You mustn't eat worms. Unless... You don't prefer worms to the food I give you, do you?
[Muffled screeching sadly, upbeat music plays, wheelbarrow squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes Augustus to the back door in a wheelbarrow.
ANGELA: Of course you don't. That would be silly. Now, let's get you inside. Give you some nice cake to take away the taste of that horrid worm.
[Wheelbarrow squeaks, thuds, Angela grunts]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the wheelbarrow and the edges of Augustus’s swaddle against the doorframe.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But after all his growing, Augustus was now too big to get back into the house...
[Wheelbarrow bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes her back against the wheelbarrow, then drops it.
ANGELA: Oopsie.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: So, Angela came up with a new plan.
[Saw grinds, hammer bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela builds a shed.
ANGELA: Ta-da! A special house for my special Loveykins.
[Door creaks, wheelbarrow squeaks]
DESCRIPTION: Angela opens the shed door.
ANGELA: You're growing up. You need your own space, so here it is. With your name on it.
[Sign Reads] Augustus, my Loveykins.
[Augustus squawks, rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela and Augustus look at the sign over the door, then she pushes the wheelbarrow into the shed.
ANGELA: I know. Lovely, isn't it?
[Augustus squawks]
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But then, one day...
[Angela hums, birds chirp, wind gusts, thunder crackles, tense music plays]
DESCRIPTION: In the garden, Angela waters flowers while Augustus sits in the wheelbarrow and watches.
ANGELA: Ooh. Oh, looks like there's a storm come. Best get you inside.
[Wind gusts, wheelbarrow squeaks, phonograph bangs]
DESCRIPTION: Angela pushes the wheelbarrow into the shed and then runs back to the house. She returns to the shed carrying a phonograph and puts it on a small table.
ANGELA: Hup. And in case the wind scares you...
[Static hisses, phonograph music plays, door closes, wind howls]
DESCRIPTION: Angela starts a record, then runs back towards the house.
ANGELA: Good night, Loveykins.
[Wind cranks, rain patters]
DESCRIPTION: In her bedroom, Angela sits on the edge of her bed and winds Enid. She puts the clock down beside the phonograph on her nightstand.
ANGELA: Good night, Enid.
[Phonograph music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela puts the needle on the record and lies in her bed.
ANGELA: Oh, I hope my Loveykins isn't too frightened.
[Light clicks, thunder booms, birds chirp]
DESCRIPTION: Angela turns off her lamp. Lightning flashes and she pulls the covers up to her eyes.
[The music stops, distant dog barks, robin sings, wings flap, dishes clink]
DESCRIPTION: Night turns into day, and the sky clears. Outside, a robin takes off from a treetop. In the kitchen, Angela puts a mug and a bowl of croissants on a tray and carries them into the hallway.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But when Angela went to take Augustus his breakfast...
[Door creaks, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela backs through the door, carrying the tray.
ANGELA: Here we are, my Loveykins. Some delicious croissants with--
[Angela gasps, exciting music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela stands wide-eyed and open-mouthed as she stares at the smashed shed. Augustus perches on top of a broken board, out of his swaddle.
ANGELA: Loveykins.
[Dishes clatter, Augustus screeches]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus spreads his wings.
ANGELA: Are you going...
[Angela sighs, thumps, wings whoosh, birds chirp, soft music plays, Augustus squawks, fabric rustles, trills, chirps, whooshing, wings flap, Angela whimpers]
DESCRIPTION: Angela faints. Augustus brings the blanket and sash to Angela. He covers her up and ties the blue sash in a bow. Augustus rests his cheek against Angela, then looks up at the sky. Augustus takes off, soaring over the town. In her backyard, Angela awakens and holds her hand against the side of her head.
ANGELA: Oh.
[Blanket rustles, Angela whimpers, footsteps rustle, sign scrapes]
DESCRIPTION: Angela throws off the blanket, stands, and runs across the backyard. She picks up the shed sign.
ANGELA: Oh, my Loveykins.
[Angela cries, Augustus screeches, wings flap, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus soars across the sky.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: But if Angela was sad, which was fair enough, Augustus was having a great time, soaring through the skies, enjoying his freedom...
[Augustus screeches, birds chirp, insects skitter, crunching]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus swoops down into a forest and lands on a branch. He eats a beetle skittering on the trunk, then eats another insect off the branch.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And, best of all, enjoying some proper fine dining. Bird style.
[Augustus screeches, upbeat music plays, hammer bangs, ladder creaks, grass rustles]
DESCRIPTION: In her backyard, Angela hammers the roof of a shed. She descends a ladder, and then gazes at the shed, smiling with her left hand resting on her hip.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: As for Angela, it took her quite a while to recover from her shock. But eventually, she rebuilt her shed, and instead of filling it with Augustus...
[Sign clatters, Angela laughs, hums, water drips, duster rustles, mellow music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Angela hangs the “Augustus my Loveykins” sign over the shed door. Inside, Angela pours a single drop of water into a cactus and dusts it with a feather duster. Two framed photos of Augustus hang on the wall near the door.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: She filled it with cactuses, or "cacti," if you're feeling clever and Latin-y. And she restarted her rests in the park.
[Ducks quack, the music stops]
DESCRIPTION: In the park, Angela sits on the log across from the duck pond. The two ducks approach her, and she looks furtively left and right.
ANGELA: Here. Have some seeds.
[Ducks quack, seeds rattle]
DESCRIPTION: Angela throws a handful of seeds on the shore.
ANGELA: Shh, shh, shh. Don't tell anyone.
[Robin chirps]
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Then, one day...
[Mellow music plays, page rustles, Augustus screeches, uplifting music plays, wings flap, door bangs]
DESCRIPTION: In her backyard, Angela relaxes on a patio chair, reading a book. Angela glances up, then lifts her sunglasses. Augustus perches on top of the shed, and Angela drops her book and runs to him. She leans against the closed shed door.
ANGELA: Ah! Loveykins! Oh, my Loveykins does love me.
[Augustus chirps, upbeat music plays]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus leans down with a dead mouse dangling from his beak.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: And so now, every so often, when she's least expecting it, she'll get another visit. And to repay her for all the treats she gave him, Augustus always brings Angela a treat of her own.
[Rustling]
DESCRIPTION: Angela catches the mouse.
ANGELA: Oh, how lovely. I'll save it for later.
[Augustus screeches, Angela chuckles, Augustus trills]
DESCRIPTION: Augustus smiles and spreads his wings. He leans down, and Angela rubs the bottom of his beak. They put their cheeks together.
ADRIAN LESTER NARRATES: Although she never eats them.
DESCRIPTION: Angela hides the dead mouse behind her back.
